This video claims that “There are no rules for a war in space”.
War must not spread to space. There has already been infinitely more war on earth than could ever be justified. War in space, especially with weapons of mass destruction could easily lead to mass extinction. Furthermore, war in space prevents scientific advancement and space colonisation by making space unsafe from attacks, with weapons fire that can continue indefinitely due to a lack of atmosphere, and by scattering more debris which makes space launches and exploration difficult.
On the topic of nuclear weapons in space “In the absence of the atmosphere… [With] multimegaton warheads… the lethal radii (from nuclear radiation) in space may be of the order of hundreds of miles.”
Article IV of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 states that:
“States Parties to the Treaty undertake not to place in orbit around the earth any objects carrying nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction, install such weapons on celestial bodies, or station such weapons in outer space in any other manner.
The moon and other celestial bodies shall be used by all States Parties to the Treaty exclusively for peaceful purposes. The establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications, the testing of any type of weapons and the conduct of military manoeuvres on celestial bodies shall be forbidden. The use of military personnel for scientific research or for any other peaceful purposes shall not be prohibited. The use of any equipment or facility necessary for peaceful exploration of the moon and other celestial bodies shall also not be prohibited.”
This treaty however does not prohibit conventional firearms in space, although it does prohibit military operations. Any party that does attempt to must be strictly prohibited from doing so, as this will lead to an arms race and could wreak massive damage to the many satellites that advance our technology for everyday things such as satellite surveillance for rescue operations. Any party that takes control of space would have too much power.
There must be no weapons or war waged outside of the earth, not only to follow international law but also for the sake of humanity’s future.
