Discrimination against women is most commonly identified when someone disrespects or harms a woman with insults or violence, and this is clearly the worst kind of discrimination. There is another lesser type of discrimination though, which is when people treat woman differently, and specifically better because of their gender. This is best known from chivalry where women are considered “the fairer sex” and are thought to have to be protected and respected more than men. This is not a good thing because it is still discrimination and because it is unfair and irrational. If someone should be protected or respected more than someone else it should be because they need that, not because of their gender. If you want to hold open a door to be nice, do so for everyone, not specifically for half of the world for some arbitrary glorification of one gender over another.
One of the reasons people did this before was because of the prejudice that women could not protected themselves and needed men to help them, which is clearly not true. Now one of the excuses that people use for this it to be chivalrous or for honour, which are arbitrary reasons since neither of those things are necessarily justified or good. They are not justified because they treat women differently than men for reasons that don’t justify the actions. Another reason that people give for treating women better is that they carry children and give birth, and that they suffer more because of that. This is true and their anatomy is slightly different than men’s which justifies certain differences in how one should treat a man and a woman, but only when these actions are directly necessitated by these anatomical differences. The mere fact that women in general suffer does not mean that all woman should be paid more than men (not that this happens anyway), or have a better chance of getting a job or being accepted into a university. It does however mean that they should be given time off work and other benefits that are needed to help them with things that are beyond their control. Specifically, having children is a choice but one cannot blame a woman for having a child because reproduction is everyone’s right and it is needed for the future. This is why woman must have time off work with compensation, medical assistance, and legal benefits to allow for all this to happen without causing problems for the family.
This applies to discrimination of any kind though. No one should be punished or given preferential treatments or benefits because of arbitrary factors such as their skin colour, gender, sexual orientation, or geopolitical status unless the benefit is necessitated by their arbitrary factor. An example of this is how soldiers are deified in the Unites States. Soldiers who sacrificed their lives to save others should be recognised and rewarded, perhaps even for life. This however is the job of the US Department of Veteran affairs. If other people want to show their appreciation for what a soldier has done that is good too, but blindly worshipping soldiers, women, or anyone else without knowing them, and just assuming that they are good people or that they have done good things, is presumptuous and prejudiced. Being a soldier does not necessarily mean that you are brave, or patriotic, or risked your life, or even wanted to risk your life, or that you were selfless or even did anything for a good reason. I would hope that most soldiers do that, but to assume that anyone with a military uniform is a great person makes no sense. Thank people who you know have done or tried to do good things, whether they are a soldier or not. Reward people who you think deserve rewards, not just veterans.
It should not be expected for men to pay for women’s meals because women in general don’t need to be paid for any more than men do. People with less money need to be paid for. If you want to pay for someone’s meal because you want to be nice then you should not discriminate. You should not get into university to maintain a percentage of a race to be accepted unless universities are being racist or for some other reasonable reason.
Treat people based on reason, not what they look like.
