I do not define insanity as doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.
I do not define sanity as thinking like everyone else.
I don’t think love is insane.
I do not agree that any degree of insanity is a good thing.
Insanity is a self reinforcing mental state characterised by a lack of rational thought. Believing in things that cannot be proven is neither irrational nor insane, but refusing to think rationally, especially with scientific and provable matters leads to incorrect conclusions. As these wrong conclusions accumulate and are used to make more conclusions, the person has a more and more incorrect perception of cause and effect, reason, life, and reality.
To be sane a person needs an accurate perception of reality, ability to make rational conclusions, and openness to new ideas. Without these things a person is so irrational that they become insane.
People such as ultrapatriots, religious zealots, scientists without regard for humanity, or selfish politicians can easily be close minded and be irrational similar to an insane person, but the difference is that the foundation of their beliefs is incorrect. Insanity is marked by actions that have no purpose, both in the sense that they do not accomplish anything and that there is no meaning in them. Many people say that when you are in love you do crazy things, but most of these things are actually done because the person’s priorities have changed. There is nothing crazy about quitting one’s job or spending a lot of money for love because sometimes a job, one’s status, or money are less important than being truly happy.
Many people claim that small actions they perform don’t have a reason and are done just because they want to, such as traditions. These things generally have a reason: the person enjoys the aesthetic or style that these things give or have some other effect, even if they do not do anything practical. Sane actions need purpose but that does not mean that they need to be immediately practical. Academic, spiritual, theoretical, or recreational actions all have meaningful purposes.
On the contrary, there are few reasons to do something such as talking to yourself because you can accomplish the same thing by speaking internally in your thoughts. Speech is generally used to convey a message to others, so when speaking to one’s self there is little reason to make sound waves that others can hear. There are some reasons to do this, but I think that many people do it without reason and simply justify it by claiming that they do not need to justify it. Talking to yourself does not make you crazy, but doing things without a reason is crazy.
Insanity is when a person is no longer able to think rationally, so they make arbitrary goals. To attain these goals they do things that have arbitrary results, so both their thoughts and behaviour have little purpose or meaning.
