Value is difficult to describe, it is an intrinsic property of any thing that gives it meaning. Value can be however also be interpreted as the usefulness of a thing, but I believe that this is possibly a misinterpretation, but atleast an alternative definition of the more important meaning of value. Money tends to be the measure by which people determine the value of something, however this value is arbitrary, since monetary value is determined by people so it can be traded. Money does not inherently have that value simply because someone attributed it to it, that arbitrary value is only meaningful when money is traded, otherwise it is simply paper with designs on it. Any physical object or idea can have, and I think has to have, some value. An object can have value in it’s worth to be traded for other goods but it also has value in that it’s form and properties make it different than other objects.
Even an object as simple as a stone can be apreciated as having a nice shape or texture, or being nice to look at, as is shown by rare valuable minerals. This property can be applied to even less obvious traits such as a small smooth stone, or a box that a child plays with even though an adult might not see and appreciate the value in it. Ideas are easily seen as having philosophical consequences that give them value, such as a field of study being appreciated for more than just it’s usefulness. Mathematics is obviously useful in some fields, but the study of math also is a reward in itself because you are learning about natural concepts such as logic and how relationships work.
Even things that one does not like can have values. For example, while war is a horrible thing, it does show how people can stand up for what they believe in and allows them to be selfless and do great things, although this is outweighed by the atrocities of war.
Understanding that almost everything has value, even if the values do not matter as much as the negative aspects of that thing, is vital to being informed and therefore to being a good and succesful person.
