Truth has always been important to me, maybe because of it being a common virtue in the media and because that is what my parents taught me. Obviously there is an issue with lying and being deceptive, but truth is more than just a standard policy to follow. Truth is not just the opposite of a lie, it’s purity and integrity in all things that you do. Truth as a virtue involves not lying to others, more importantly not lying to yourself, following what you believe in, and always searching for the truth.
You should not lie to others because you would be giving them wrong information. Giving someone wrong information could cause them to make wrong decisions which could be harmful to them or others. More importantly, you are making them think something that is incorrect, so their brains contain false information. This false information could stay uncorrected for any amount of time, and it is a shame for them to not be able to know that the things they know are false, similar to how breaking something causes part of it’s inherent details to be lost. More practically, you would be deceiving them and chosing to not give them what they want, but instead give them what is more convenient to you, often hurting them. This is inconsiderate to them, and therefore immoral.
More harmfully, lying to yourself is extremely bad. While you might need to lie to yourself and others, that does not change the fact that they are inherently bad things. When you lie to yourself, you do not allow yourself to have the information you need to make decisions and to know things that would benefit you. Lying to yourself gives you wrong information that you would then use to create more false conclusions later on. This could not only make you create many wrong conclusions and thus decisions later on which could be very harmful to you, but you also create a false reality based on this false information that could harm you mentally and psychologically.
A single lie can cause someone to make several false conclusions, which in turn would give you more false information and false conclusions.
Being true to yourself means to not betray what what you believe in, specifically your morality. If you do what is easy instead of what you think is rght, then you are giving in to your subconscious instincts. These insatincts tell you to do what causes les pain to you even though your conscious mind knows that it is not worth the pleasure. If your subconscious could know that it is not worth the pleasure, then it would tell you to do differently, but it does not since it is just arbitrary programming that ignores what you really want. When you sacrifice something that you believe in for personal gain, it should be for the greater good, otherwise you are going against what you thought yourself was correct. This would make you a hypocrite and weak, and does not make sense because you would be doing something that you would have told someone else was wrong. If you do need to do something that goes aginst your beliefs, it should be for a good reason that justifies it, and it should be a last resort option.
The truth is something you should always try to attain, since it is vital to a healthy and happy life. Searching for the truth involves being honest to others and yourself, and not betraying yourself. It also means to look for what is true and what is false, in order to better inform yourself and to be a more whole and better person
